Cape Town - The ANC in the Western Cape is investigating rumours that one of its bigshots spent a night in jail after allegedly being caught driving drunk.

ANC member Melvin Swarts had tongues wagging when he posted on the ANC Western Cape Facebook page that an ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) member who is also the number one candidate on the Proportional list, was bust in Swellendam for driving gesuip.

The post reads: “What a disgrace that a PEC Member and Nr.1 PR-Candidate was arrested and kept in the Police holdingcells (sic) for drunken driving on Saturday nite (sic).”

It appears he was referring to PEC member Amanda Swart, because he posted on her Facebook wall: “Ja neh… so sal ons, ons koppe laat sak!” (Yes well, This is how we will hang our heads.)

A few minutes later he tagged Swart in another post: “Ek staan bankvas op my membership in die ANC, ek sal ook nie teen die ANC praat of Campaign (sic) nie, maar vir my laat ek nie vang vir Dronkbestuur (sic) nie! (I am adamant about my ANC membership, and I will not speak or campaign against the ANC, but I will not allow myself to be arrested for drunk driving.)

Despite being vocal on Facebook, Swarts wouldn’t say much when approached for comment.

His reply was: “I don’t have the mandate to speak to the media.”

Constable Johnatan Filander says there was no record of Swart being arrested.

But a police source says it’s possible she was kept in the cells for a few hours to sober up.

ANC Overberg Regional Secretary Themba Tebele said the matter was being investigated.

Swart did not anwer her phone or respond to messages.
