Johannesburg - The ANC had permission to gather within a 100m of its headquarters in Johannesburg on Wednesday, metro police said.

There was an arrangement that DA members would not come within 100m of Luthuli House and that ANC members may protect Luthuli House, spokesman Wayne Minnaar told reporters outside the ANC office.

“However, the DA march had to be rerouted for security and safety reasons.”

The Democratic Alliance's march for “real” jobs was supposed to end at Beyers Naude square about a block from Luthuli House.

Police stopped the marchers at Marshall and Rissik streets saying it was too dangerous for them to continue.

A short while later, a group of people wearing ANC attire ran towards the marchers forcing police to fire stun grenades at them.

On Miriam Makeba Street, a group, also dressed in ANC attire, threw petrol bombs at police.

Minnaar said the incidents where African National Congress members went beyond the 100m of the offices would be investigated.
