Bredasdorp - When paramedic Wickus Kiewitz reached Anene Booysen, the Bredasdorp teen who was raped and murdered, she was lying on her left shoulder and her legs were tucked in underneath her.
Johannes Kana, 21, is on trial in the Swellendam Circuit High Court.
The State alleges that Kana raped Booysen in February this year, near Kleinbegin in Bredasdorp, and disembowelled her, which resulted in her death at Tygerberg Hospital.
The trial has been set down for four weeks.
On Wednesday, Kiewitz, who was a paramedic with the ambulance services in Bredasdorp at the time, told the court Booysen had bruise marks on her arms and face.
“When we got there, the lady was lying on her left shoulder and her legs were tucked in underneath her. I turned her on to her back and she moaned.
“My partner and I put her on a stretcher and placed her in the ambulance,” he said.
Kiewitz said as they were treating Booysen inside the ambulance, she attempted to fend them off.
“She was hitting and kicking to try and stop us from getting close to her.
“I tried to explain that we just wanted to help her, but she kept making noises because she was in a lot of pain,” he said.
Kiewitz testified that he took the clothing items found near Booysen and put them in the ambulance with her.
After she had been treated at the hospital, Kiewitz said Booysen sat up and requested water, complaining she was thirsty.
“When the sister on duty asked her if she knew who had done this to her, she nodded yes.
“But I'm not sure she was in a state to know what was going on around her,” he said.
Earlier, during the inspection in loco, Chrisna Mentoor, who had been friends with both Kana and Booysen, pointed out where she had last seen the pair after they left the pub together.
Mentoor testified on Tuesday that she saw Kana and Booysen leave the pub together after having a few drinks with several of their friends.
Back in court, Mentoor was interrogated as to why she had initially told the police that Kana went home with her when she knew he had left with Booysen.
Mentoor said Kana had always been one to protect his female friends.
“No one told me that I had to lie to protect him,” she said.
She said Kana and Booysen did not appear very drunk when they left the bar.
The matter resumes on Thursday.
