Cape Town - A man has been arrested for attempting to rob a metro police officer following an operation on the “N2 hell-run” in Cape Town on Thursday.

A metro policewoman was stationed in an unmarked “bait” car along the N2 between the Mew Way and R300 off-ramps when two men tried to rob her.

Police arrested a 28-year-old Khayelitsha resident who was found to be in possession of a toy gun and a knife, while his accomplice managed to escape, Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said.

Similar operations would be conducted but the modus operandi would change, he said.

“Safety on the N2 is the responsibility of a number of roleplayers including the SAPS, the provincial government and the SA National Roads Agency. I am engaging with them on a continuous basis,” said Smith.

The city has appealed to motorists to be cautious when using the N2. Many motorists found themselves stranded on the N2 without fuel or after experiencing mechanical defects, according to statistics for November and December last year. Metro police responded to 134 incidents.

“The number of incidents over a relatively short period is astounding. I want to urge motorists to safeguard their wellbeing and that of their passengers by ensuring they have enough petrol before they set off,” Smith said.
