A crying baby was found abandoned in a pit toilet in Thembalethu, near George on Thursday, Southern Cape police said.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said it is believed the four-month-old baby boy was dumped there on Wednesday. Residents found him on Thursday.

“We received information that a woman with dreadlocks, carrying two children, walked past the toilet at around 8am on Wednesday,” he said.

“The child she was carrying on her back is believed to be the abandoned baby found in the toilet on top of human faeces.”

He said residents saw the same woman minutes later carrying only one child.

“The shocked and traumatised baby was taken to the George Hospital where he was treated for dehydration and exhaustion,” said Pojie A case of attempted murder and a case of child neglect had been opened.
