Barkly East escapee re-arrested

Barkly East, Eastern Cape -

An awaiting-trial prisoner was re-arrested on Wednesday in Phola Park near Barkly East, Eastern Cape police said.

Police caught him while responding to a tip-off, Maj-Gen Ernest Sigobe said.

His arrest brought to eight the number of men rearrested out of a group of 11 who escaped from Barkly East prison on Saturday.

They took warders hostage and stole a firearm from a safe. On their way out, they shot dead warder Mzukisi Michael Dusubana, 54, in the courtyard and wounded four of his colleagues.

“We are still trying to establish how they found that firearm,” said Sigobe

Four of them were re-arrested on Sunday on farms in the area.

All of them had been arrested for crimes such as housebreaking, theft, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and murder.

“They are now facing additional charges of escaping prison, murder and assault,” Sigobe said.

Those rearrested would appear in the Barkly East Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. - Sapa
