Cape Town - A 50-year-old Emmanuel Evangelist Church bishop accused of raping a 15-year-old pupil has been released on R5 000 bail.

The bishop is accused of raping the Elsen pupil who he used to transport to and from school.

He appeared briefly before Magistrate Goolam Bawa in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court earlier this week, when a regional court date was set for his trial.

Dressed in a beige and black suit, Luvuyo Gerald Hendrik, who intends to plead not guilty, left the court expressing his happiness.

The prosecution informed the court that “investigations have been completed and the case is ready for a regional court date”.

Hendrik was arrested by police in August after they noticed his vehicle parked in a deserted area in Philippi.

When police approached, Hendrik allegedly attempted to flee and was arrested.

He will return to the Wynberg Regional Court on November 22.

*Meanwhile, in a separate case this week a 47-year-old father of two from Seawinds appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl he transports.
