Durban - A gang of men armed with AK47 rifles and explosives have blown up a drop safe at another service station on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

The men have been bombing garage drop safes and ATM machines around the province. Similar incidents have been reported in Gauteng.

The bombing is the second in three days in eManzimtoti.

“A security officer was on duty at Kingsburgh Garage near St Winifreds, when a silver-grey BMW with two occupants armed with firearms stopped at a petrol station and jumped out of the vehicle,” said Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

The incident happened at 1am on Thursday.

“The garage safe was bombed and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. They fled the scene in their getaway vehicle. A case of malicious damage to property is being investigated by eManzimtoti SAPS.” Naicker said.

On Monday morning, a drop safe in the Caltex convenience store on Andrew Zondo (Kingsway) Road was bombed. The explosion ripped open the steel door and parts of the interior of the safe. Some burnt banknotes and coins were left behind. The garage was closed at the time.

Incidents similar to this have occurred since 2008. Caltex Caversham Motors garage in Pinetown was also hit twice in a few months.
