Durban - Minutes before being sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for killing his girlfriend, an eManzimtoti man told the Durban High Court he felt he had not been given a fair trial and criticised the police investigation.

Acting Judge Burt Laing informed the legal counsel for 29-year-old Zazi Mvubu that this could be taken up at a later stage.

On Tuesday, Mvubu was convicted of the murder of 28-year-old Bongekile Motsamai in February last year at his home in Adams Mission after an argument over her whereabouts on Valentine’s Day.

He had assaulted Motsamai with an open hand and clenched fist and kicked her on her head and neck. When she lost consciousness, Mvubu dragged her to her car and drove to the uMlazi cemetery where he set the car alight.

In passing sentence, the acting judge said Mvubu’s failure to control his emotions had resulted in his four children and disabled brother losing his financial support and Motsamai’s daughter losing her mother. He said Motsamai was a young woman who had a full life ahead of her, but it was “snuffed out” because of Mvubu’s jealousy.

He said also of concern was the severity of the injury inflicted. “You effectively punched and kicked her to death.”

After sentencing, Motsamai’s mother, Rejoice, stood in the court gallery and clapped saying “Thank you my Lord. You (Mvubu) deserve it.” She had earlier testified, saying she had regarded him as a son.
