Johannesburg - A burglar was shot dead in Kempton Park on Johannesburg's East Rand, police said on Monday.

At around 9.15pm on Sunday, the owner of the Wholesale complex in Newton Street was woken up by security guards who informed him that his alarm had gone off, said Captain Jethro Mtshali.

The man and security members went to the premises and saw that the roof was damaged.

“The owner noticed some movement on top of the roof and fired warning shots.

“Upon checking they found one of the suspects with bullet wounds on his lower body and a bag containing cigarettes and alcohol was found.”

Paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.

Police were searching for two more suspects.

A case of business burglary and an inquest docket had been opened.
