Durban - A Man had a close shave with death when burglars shot at his car when he returned to his Overport home on Wednesday night.
The homeowner, who did not want to be named, had taken his family out for supper after 7pm and received a phone call from a neighbour saying they could hear noises from inside his house.
He went home with a close relative. Before he turned into his driveway, he noticed a silver Mercedes parked there.
The driver, upon seeing him, drove out and parked, idling, on the roadside.
The homeowner remained in his car. He said two men carrying household goods ran out and jumped into the Mercedes.
He had thought of blocking its path by parking in front of it, when another two men emerged from the house.
They began shooting at him and he reversed to avoid being hit.
The men drove off in the direction of Morningside. A bullet struck the right-hand side passenger door.
“I am in a state of shock at the moment,” he said.
According to police at the scene, the men wore gloves and balaclavas. They broke the pedestrian gate and derailed the automatic driveway gate before breaking the house’s front gate and door.
They ransacked the house, ripped off the flat-screen televisions from the wall and took valuables. The men used pillowcases to load valuables, including the CCTV recorder.
Mayville police have opened a case of house break-in and attempted murder.
In a separate incident in uMlazi, a man was shot by police in C-Section last night.
Police on patrol noticed two men acting suspiciously. When they alighted from their patrol van to search them, the men drew firearms and allegedly shot at the officers.
They returned fire, wounding one of the men. The other fled. A case of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm has been opened.
