The owner of a dog which was abandoned with severe burn wounds in Vereeniging has been charged with animal cruelty, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said on Wednesday.

Inspector Marlien Pieterse said the SPCA traced the woman and laid charges against her on Tuesday in terms of the Animal Protection Act.

The owner said grass at their property was set on fire and that she later noticed that the dog was burning in its kennel.

The Shar Pei cross breed was found abandoned and tied up with an extension chord on the side of a road last month.

SPCA inspectors took the dog which had burn wounds all over its body to a veterinary clinic. – Sapa
