Johannesburg - A man was arrested in connection with the torching of three buses in Dobsonville on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

He was allegedly part of a group of commuters who protested against a proposed increase in bus fares, Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said.

“The commuters went to the bus depot in Dobsonville, left and then decided to torch the Putco buses at a bus route not far away.”

“They also threw stones... No injuries were sustained.”

The commuters apparently approached the management of the bus depot in Dobsonville on Tuesday. They left without taking action.

The 40-year-old man would appear in Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday next week on a charge of malicious damage to property.

Johannesburg metro police said the situation in the area was calm on Thursday evening, with traffic being diverted from Elias Motsoaledi Road.

“We were told that four buses were torched. The burning buses have been extinguished and will be towed away to a nearby depot,” spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said.

“Everything is under control and we will hopefully open the road later.” - Sapa
