Caledon cops bust man with abalone worth R2m

Cape Town – Western Cape police have arrested a 33-year-old man for illegal possession of abalone worth R2 million near Caledon.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said on Thursday at around 7pm, Caledon members were on their way to attend a complaint at Mariasdal Overberg Water Works when they spotted a suspicious silver Nissan Navara driving in front of them on the N2 highway.

“Members could see that it was carrying a load, and could not drive very fast,” Van Wyk said. “They pulled the vehicle over and searched it and found 14 432 pieces of abalone with an estimated street value of R2 million.

“The driver, a 33-year-old man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing illegal possession of abalone charges. The vehicle was confiscated.”
