Pretoria - A 34-year old security officer from the Western Cape has been arrested on charges of possession and distribution of child pornography after an investigation by the South African police in co-operation with United States authorities.

The man, from Parow, will be brought before the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said on Wednesday.

“A joint operation between the provincial investigation unit of the South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) from Gauteng and the United States’ Homeland Security was carried out at his home in Parow on Wednesday.”

“The suspect’s arrest came as a result of an enquiry received from the US Homeland Security via Interpol in January this year. Further investigations by the Gauteng FCS, which is focusing on crimes against the sexual exploitation of children in the rest of South Africa, pointed them to Cape Town, where the suspect was arrested yesterday,” said Naidoo.

Police confiscated a number of items from his home which included a tablet, video player, two USBs, three cell phones, hundreds of compact discs and a hard drive.

Naidoo said the FCS had been working with authorities around the world and that had been “the primary reason it has been so successful in arresting perpetrators of child pornography and sexual exploitation of children from all over the country”.
