Le Roux said Detective Sergeant Robert Jooste, attached to the SAPS Brighton Beach tracking and tracing unit, responded and spotted the car with two men in it along Khulu Road.

“The driver sped off, but stopped further along the road,” he said.

The men got out of the car and ran in different directions. In the car the police found a .38 special revolver with five rounds of ammunition under the driver’s seat, as well as seven sets of car keys with immobilisers.

“The car was hijacked during 2011 in the Pinetown policing area,” Le Roux said.

It had false number plates.

Le Roux said several sets of fingerprints had been lifted from inside and outside the car, which would be sent to the local criminal record centre.

The gun would be sent for ballistics testing to see if it had been used in any crimes.
