Cape Town – Four armed robbers on Thursday failed in an attempt to rob security guards of money meant for welfare grant beneficiaries at the Bontheuwel Civic Centre, outside Cape Town, police said.

"According to witnesses the security company with SASSA [South African Social Security Agency] pay outs stopped at mentioned address and while the security personnel was busy offloading the equipment, four unidentified armed men approached the security officials and asked for money and keys to the vehicles," said Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk.

"The suspects were disturbed by the community and a metro police vehicle that passed the scene."

The four men did not manage to get any of the money but managed to flee the scene with two firearms belonging to the security guards.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
