Rawsonville, Western Cape -  A woman constable has been arrested at the Rawsonville police station near Worcester for attempted murder, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said on Thursday.

“It is alleged that... a married female (officer) booked out a firearm for a shooting exercise on Wednesday,” spokesman Moses Dlamini said.

She allegedly fired two shots at a policeman she had reportedly been having an affair with. They were based at the same police station, Dlamini said.

Another officer heard the gunshots and disarmed her. The critically wounded policeman was taken to hospital and the woman officer was arrested.

She would appear in the Worcester Magistrate's Court on Friday to face a charge of attempted murder. - Sapa
