A Cape Town metro police constable appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court on Thursday in connection with the rape of his girlfriend, police said.

The 33-year-old man is accused of raping his 23-year-old girlfriend on Tuesday, said Moses Dlamini, spokesman for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

The man, who faces charges of rape and assault, was granted bail.

“It is believed the couple went clubbing before they went to the man's house in Mitchells Plain at about 3am.”

Dlamini said the man then hit the woman over her head and she lost consciousness before he allegedly raped her. - Sapa
