Burgersfort - A Limpopo police officer was killed on Tuesday morning after he sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the throat, police said.

The 35-year-old police officer was on duty with Sekhukhune detectives, tracing a business robbery suspect in the Mogashoa village near Burgersfort when the shooting occurred at 1am.

Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said the shooting occurred as the officers surrounded the suspect’s informal dwelling.

The victim was fatally shot in the throat while another officer escaped with a bullet wound to the leg. Police returned fire, wounding the suspect in chest.

Ledwaba said the suspect was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard.

Acting provincial commissioner Nonhlanhla Zulu condemned the incident and said that police “will never leave any stone unturned in combatting and investigating [criminals]”.

“The Acting Provincial Commissioner further expressed her condolences to the bereaved family of the slain member,” said Ledwaba.
