Kimberley – The member of the SAPS who was seriously injured during a shooting in the Kimberley CBD, which left two officers along with a former policeman fatally wounded, is recovering well in the Gariep Mediclinic.

Communication officer for the hospital group, Denise Coetzee, confirmed on Tuesday that Sergeant Oaribile Boyise, 36, is currently in a stable and satisfactory condition following the incident which left him fighting for his life in in the intensive care unit.

Last month, a domestic dispute between former police officer Xolani Feni and his wife, who is also a member of the SAPS, led to a bloody gun battle at a busy intersection in the Kimberley CBD.

The drama, which played out at the Bultfontein Road/Long Street intersection in front of several motorists, who were also caught in the crossfire, was preceded by a domestic dispute minutes earlier at the police’s provincial head office on the corner of Bultfontein Road and George Street.

A member of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Kimberley, Warrant Officer Duncan Vertue, 46, died on the scene, while Sergeant Gregory Ian Jagger Vis, 36, from the Tactical Response Team, succumbed to his injuries in hospital shortly after the shooting.

Feni was also fatally wounded during the incident.

“Boyise is still a patient in Gariep Mediclinic,” Coetzee confirmed on Tuesday. “He is currently in a stable and satisfactory condition.”

Meanwhile, national spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), Moses Dlamini, confirmed that the matter is still being investigated.

“The investigation is ongoing,” said Dlamini. “There is no time frame for completion.”
