Pretoria - A police officer was shot in the leg during an armed robbery at a Vodashop in Pretoria North on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

The armed men held a security guard hostage and stole an undisclosed number of cellphones at the North Park Mall, Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said.

“On their way out, they tried to shoot at the security guard who managed to run... and the bullet hit the member of the police who was passing by,” Nkoadi said.

The robbers then jumped into an awaiting white bakkie.

No arrests had been made.

The police officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
