Western Cape - Two men accused of stealing around R42 000 worth of copper cable would appear in the Ladismith Magistrate's Court on Friday, Western Cape police said.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said the two Mozambicans were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday after 700kg of copper cable was stolen about 50km from Ladismith.

On Tuesday, Telkom operators alerted police to the crime, who arrived to find a bakkie with seven rolls of copper cable. Two men fled the scene on foot.

“Both suspects were arrested within two days with the help of the farming community and members of the Sanbona Nature Resort, who alerted the police to the whereabouts of the suspects,” Pojie said.

One of the men was hitch-hiking. A farmer picked him up and took him to the Barrydale police station, where he was identified and linked to the theft. - Sapa
