Cape Town - A suspected serial rapist in Bellville, Cape Town, has been arrested, Western Cape police said on Saturday.

“This week, a group of dedicated investigators worked tirelessly and their hard work paid off when a [alleged] serial rapist who committed 12 rape cases in Bellville was arrested”, spokewoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Gugulethu on Thursday, she said.

The rapist’s modus operandi was to offer a job to women standing in Voortrekker Road looking for employment. He told victims he would employ them in an undertaking company.

“He would then ask victims to accompany him to the building that is situated close to the Bellville railway line; on the way he [would] drag [the] victims to the bushes nearby and rape them at knifepoint. In most cases victims were robbed of their cellphones and cash,” she said.

The victim’s stolen cellphone in the last reported rape case had a tracker device and the suspect was followed for a week by Bellville family violence, child protection, and sexual offences (FCS) unit and crime prevention members.

The suspect was arrested and was expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday on 12 charges of rape, Rwexana said.
