Johannesburg - A tip-off by an anonymous caller led police to a shack in Ennerdale where they recovered an AK47 assault rifle, ammunition, a balaclava and arrested a suspect, Gauteng SAPS Provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said on Thursday.

Dlamini said police “applaud” the person who tipped them off for having the courage to expose the suspect who was arrested inside a shack at Ennerdale. The suspect was found in possession of an AK47 assault rifle, 48 rounds of ammunition and a balaclava.

“Police responded quickly after receiving an anonymous call and went to search a shack. On searching the shack, a firearm with two magazines were found hidden under the bed in a bag,” said Dlamini.

He said the firearm will be sent for ballistic examination to establish if it has been used to commit serious and violent crimes that could include business robberies, hijackings and cash-in-transit robberies.

Dlamini said the suspect was being questioned by police and would appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Friday. He faces charges of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Police would like to assure members of the public that information about criminals is treated with confidentiality.
