Police have rescued a woman from a man who tried to kidnap her in Mofolo North in Soweto, Johannesburg police said on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old woman was walking near the Jabulani hostel around 10pm on Tuesday when a car pulled up alongside her, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The driver grabbed the woman, threw her into the vehicle and sped away. A passer-by alerted the police who gave chase. Makhubela said the woman tried to get out of the speeding vehicle, forcing the man to pull over in Mofolo North.

“A scuffle ensued as the man tried to drag her back into the car. He assaulted the woman several times with his fists before the police came to her rescue.”

She was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. The 36-year-old man was charged with kidnapping, assault and attempted rape. He was expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Thursday. – Sapa
