Johannesburg - Two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and some security guards were taken hostage in a townhouse complex east of Pretoria on Wednesday, police said.

“Currently we are standing off at a hostage situation. We can confirm at this stage that there are two members of the SAPS as well as security officers being held hostage by an unknown person within the complex,” police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said.

“The South African Police Task Force has taken over the hostage negotiations and they are currently busy with the situation.”

Miller could not confirm the exact number of hostages or if there were any injuries or fatalities.

“There were earlier reports of shootings, however, at this stage I am not in a position to be able to confirm any injuries or fatalities,” he said.
