Cops to appear for murder

Johannesburg - The murder trial of four policemen is expected to start in the Atteridgeville Regional Court on Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

Spokesman Moses Dlamini said a police captain and three constables would appear for the murder, in February 2012, of 28-year-old Richard Mahlangu.

“It is alleged that Mr Mahlangu was arrested at his home on February 11, 2012, between midnight and 1am the next morning. He was then allegedly assaulted by unknown policemen,” Dlamini said in a statement.

“The suspect was then placed on the back of an open police bakkie and the police drove off with him. He was found dead at about 4.45am on February 12, 2012, at the Diepsloot police station.”

Mahlangu was found lying in the parking area of the police station, he said.

Dlamini said two other people were assaulted by the same police officers.

At the time of the offence, the captain was 46-years-old and the three constables were 31, 32 and 33, he said.

“All four accused were dismissed from the police a week ago, after a disciplinary hearing.” - Sapa
