North West - The Hawks seized dagga worth over R750 000 in two house raids in the North West, police said on Saturday.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said in the first incident, dagga worth around R470 700 was seized at a house in Orkney on Wednesday.

The raid came after police received a tip-off.

Makau said the house owner, a 30-year-old Lesotho national was arrested.

Two other men, suspected to have been his customers, fled the scene after shooting at police.

“The (Lesotho national) is believed to be the mastermind in selling of dagga in the area. It is alleged that the premises are used as (a) dagga storage area,” said Makau.

The man appeared in the Orkney Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where he was released on bail of R500 000.

He was expected to appear in court again on January 17, where he would face charges of possession and dealing in dagga.

In a separate incident, a woman was arrested in Stilfontein on Wednesday, after police found dagga worth R285 000 at her home, said Makau.

Police were again acting on a tip off.

The woman appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday and the case was postponed for further investigation.

She was kept in police custody and would return to court soon, he added. - Sapa
