Johannesburg - A taxi driver was wounded in a drive-by shooting on Ontdekkers Road in Horizonville, Roodepoort on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

He and other taxi drivers were holding a meeting in an open area when they were attacked, Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

Occupants of a white car opened fire on them. The drivers scattered and found one of their colleagues had been shot in the foot. Another driver was badly assaulted.

“We don't know who assaulted him because the car did not stop,” Makhubela said.

Both men were in hospital. The cause of the attack was not immediately clear and police had yet to take statements from the two men.

Cases of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were being investigated.

This was the second case of violence involving taxi drivers in Johannesburg in as many days. A taxi driver was shot and killed on William Nicol Drive on Wednesday in what was suspected to be taxi violence.

Makhubela could not confirm whether the latest attack was also linked to taxi violence.
