Johannesburg - A drunk BMW driver’s attempts to evade arrest on Sunday landed him in even more trouble.

First, the man swore at and threatened officers who tried to arrest him on the N3 highway, allegedly telling them that he had close ties with a government minister and that they would be fired if they arrested him.

When that didn’t work and he was thrown into a police car, he opened the passenger door and flung himself out of the moving vehicle and tried to flee. But again, his attempt to evade arrest failed as members of the Ekurhuleni metro police department swiftly rearrested him.

In a last desperate bid, the 35-year-old offered the officers a R70 bribe.

Metro police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said the man, who was travelling with two other drunk people, was taken to Alberton police station. He has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, bribery, resisting arrest, assault and crimen injuria.

Kgasago said the man was in possession of a Department of Public Service and Administration identity card. He was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said last week she was wary to celebrate the 46 percent decrease in accidents over Easter as the number of people being arrested for drunk driving was still high.
