Cape Town - A man was arrested after abalone with an estimated street value of R200 000 was found in his car in Gordon’s Bay, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the man was arrested on Monday at 8.40pm, after information was received about a vehicle possibly containing abalone heading along the R44 Coastal Road towards Gordons Bay, from the direction of Hermanus.

“The vehicle was identified as a white Hyundai i10. After testing the vehicle it was found that the vehicle was a rental car from a company in Durban. The vehicle was identified and pulled off the road on Faure Marine Drive opposite the Ooskus Fisheries in Gordons Bay,” Van Wyk said.

He said after the vehicle was stopped the two men jumped out and fled on foot.

“One of the suspects, a 26-year old male was found and apprehended, while the other managed to evade arrest,” he said. “A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 916 shucked abalone with an estimated street value of R200 000.”
