Johannesburg - Electricity parastatal Eskom has warned the public about a scam in which criminals are pretending to be Eskom and claiming that Eskom has changed its banking account to Nedbank, and subsequently provides those banking details.

The fraudsters used letters, faxes, and emails bearing the Eskom logo and the forged signature of Eskom group chief executive Brian Molefe. They had also forged Nedbank banking details, Eskom said in a statement on Saturday.

“Eskom customers are asked to take note that Eskom does not have a banking account with Nedbank and that Eskom would never send notifications to its customers in this manner. Eskom’s banking details appear on customers’ electricity bill and, if in doubt, please contact the Eskom customer call centre on 08600-375-66 for verification.”

To report incidents of fraud, corruption, and irregularities involving Eskom, members of the public should call Eskom’s crime line on 0800-11-27-22 or email [email protected] to report the incident.
