A woman will appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after she said she was protecting a 13-year-old girl allegedly being kept as a sex slave, Gauteng police said.

Captain Katlego Mogale said she was charged with defeating the ends of justice.

The woman, a former police officer, was arrested on Saturday after she allegedly took the girl from a house in Vanderbijpark, but refused to bring her to the police station, she said.

On Thursday the woman told the Sowetan newspaper that police did not want to open a case and arrest the men at the house because she had left the girl behind at her own home.

“We are talking about a girl who has been abused by a lot of men. Bringing her here (to the station), where there are men, would not do her good,” she said.

Mogale said the woman brought the girl to the police station the next day.

The girl, who was from Parys, Free State, had been missing since January.

The woman, who founded a community centre down the road from her house said she had previously rescued four other children from the same men.

Mogale said police were still looking for the men but declined to comment further. – Sapa
