Cape Town - The man who allegedly gouged his wife’s eyes out handed himself over to police more than 24 hours after the gruesome attack.

The Mitchell’s Plain father of three is expected in court on Wednesday.

The man’s wife was found in the early hours of Sunday morning, half-naked with her eyes hanging out of her head, lying on the floor of her their Hyde Park home.

The suspect allegedly called his cousin after the attack and told her to go to his home and to call an ambulance.

Brigadier Cass Goolam from Mitchell’s Plain police station says the suspect will only be charged with attempted murder.

“I can confirm that the suspect handed himself over [on Monday] afternoon,” Goolam said.

“He will be charged with attempted murder but there was no rape.

“[Police] initially thought she was raped because of the condition she was found in, but according to medical report she was not raped,” Goolam added.

Meanwhile the victim remains in a coma.

The suspect’s cousin said on Monday that he called her before going to the police station.

“It was the first time he called me again since [Sunday] morning,” she said.

“He told me he is going to the police station and I must meet him there. We met before 2pm and then he went inside and handed himself over. He is in custody now,” she said
