Five policemen have been arrested for alleged involvement in a Johannesburg jewellery-store robbery, Gauteng police said on Monday.
Police spokesman Colonel Neville Malila said two officers were arrested at their homes in Pretoria on Sunday following an armed robbery in Jeppe Street, Johannesburg. This brought the number of policemen arrested in the matter to five. The first three were arrested on Friday after leaving a robbery at a jewellery store on the corner of Jeppe and Harrison streets.
The two officers, both aged 41, arrested on Sunday were from the Pretoria West and Boschkop detective branches. They would face charges of armed robbery and possession of an illegal firearm when they appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Malila said the investigator would request a postponement for further investigation.
During a search of the homes detectives confiscated an R5 rifle with two magazines, 60 rounds of ammunition and 19 case dockets from different detective branches.
“Detectives have positively linked some of the jewellery that was confiscated from the arrested suspects, as well as the rifle, to an armed robbery at the North Gate Mall's NWJ jewellery shop on October 4.”
During the October 4 robbery, a group of between eight and 12 men shot and killed a jewellery-shop manager, aged 38, and wounded four other people before fleeing the scene, Malila said.
“Several suspects have been arrested in the matter that is currently before court.”
The Hawks arrested another three officers, aged between 31 and 35, in an unrelated matter on Thursday in Magaliesburg. The constables were wanted in connection with a November 10 truck hijacking. They would appear in the Magaliesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of corruption.
These arrests brought the number of police officials arrested the past few days to eight, Malila said.
Gauteng police provincial commissioner Mzwandile Petros warned police officers that corruption would not be tolerated.
He said since September 1 more than 125 police officials had been arrested for corruption and other related cases. This showed the “vigour and seriousness of this management to root out corruption”.
“SAPS members responsible for tarnishing our professional image will be severely dealt with and must face the consequences of their corrupt behaviour,” he said in a statement.
Internal SAPS disciplinary investigations into the suspension of the members were underway. - Sapa

@Jess ---> catch a wake up and stop wallowing in self pity feeling sorry for crooked cops. These guys got no guts to really fight crime. Most can't find any other job and their 'connection' fixed them a cop job. Go ask the copshop crooks what the heck is wrong with you people - not us. You are out of line. Pull out head head from under the sand and take a good look around. The copshop is a mess!

JEss, news for you, we dont cower behind our computer screens. I will tell these criminals to their face what I think of them. They are supposed to be defenders of the law and what we are finding is that some of the worst violent crime gangs in the country from ATM bombings, Casino and armoured van hijackings etc are actually being organised by the Metro AND SAPS. If it were me sitting as judge I would double their sentence to send a message to those others. They are scum and just how are we meant to trust them? THEY ARE CRIMINALS and problem is most who are under investigation are still on full pay and out on the streets killing and intimidating witnesses. I know there are some good cops out there but from my own sources, the rough estimate is that a minimum of 18% of all police (metro and SAPS) are involved in criminal activity.

I am not a spokesperson for SAPS, but I dare any one of you who cowar behind your pc's and point fingers and make generalised derogatory comments about people who literally risk their lives on a daily basis to try and do the same. Not all of them are corrupt! Do you know what a bitter pill it is for the good guys to swallow when there are corrupt colleagues amongst them who bring the name of the entire force into disrepute? Then to have the public tarnish them all with the same brush! Shame on you! We are all frustrated but that does not mean we must get nasty! Does it not make you corrupt by making generalised derogatory statements? Furthermore the fact that more and more of these rotten apples are being exposed should tell you that some lazy assed high ranking official is getting his butt kicked somewhere to do something about corruption and yes the level of corruption in SA makes your heads spin, however when there is nothing done about it we criticize and when there is something done about it - we criticize, what the heck is wrong with you people?! Maybe being hijacked 5 times is good enough reason to move to Oz, good for you that you found somewhere 'safe' to live, my question is how did you manage to get hijacked five times, surely if I experienced a crime once I would make damn sure I pull out all the stops to not let it happen twice let alone five times, something fishy there! As for not being able to use the SAPS officer's cellphone cos 'he had no airtime', its his personal phone, does he not have the right to say he has no airtime? Or maybe you wanted him to be corrupt and take money on the side too, so that he could buy airtime when you needed it? The double standards just beats me...I can tell you that the experience I have had with law enforcement officials, whether it be of a traffic violation or reporting an incident to SAPS nature, has always been of a courteous nature. What you should perhaps look at changing is your negative opinion of people and situations. I am not saying your experiences are not real, however from personal experience I know if my attitude is the right one - whereby I command respect and at the same time give respect then I attract the right attitudes from the people and situations I need it from. This does not only apply to SAPS but to life in general...

Yes, our Police Force is not a force to be reckoned with! All too often you read about cops robbing people, cops this, cops that, and why? Because they get away with it, you cannot put the biggest Tsotsi of all in charge of the Police Force, monkey see, monkey do! And I don't mean that in a derogatory fashion

We must not make 'blanket statements' about the cops, yes, we have some rotten cops as we also have some rotten people in all walks of life... Let us all report all criminal activities, don't do crime, don't bribe cops, don't buy stollen property.Crime is a global problem, while it is disturbing that in SA, we seem to be having violent crime! The powers that be need to identify and deal with the root cause of crime. l don't agree with a blanket statement that the cause of crime is poverty, l know a lot of poor people that do not do crime. Infact, rich people do engage in criminal activities....

Honestly the reason most of this corruption is there is because most cops do not even understand the oath they take to serve and protect the people of this country. They enter the police force as means to have a paycheck at the end of the month so they can put their gold tooth's on and then at the end of the day, they become greedy wanting to make quick cash and nothing will stand in their way not even the people they vowed to serve and protect, they do what they please thinking they are above the law. If you were to ask all the corrupt cops why they are cops to begin with we wouldn't be shocked cause they wouldn't have an answer.

These are the same cops that decide who is allowed to own a firearm in this country. Of course they will do their best to deny licenses to the law-abiding public as it makes their "moonlighting activities" dangerous for themselves.

Corruption is only tolerated if you have sufficient political clout, otherwise you may be hung out to appease the media, guilty or not. However there is a slight chance of an innocent victim, most are on the take!

The police force is riddled with crooks and criminals. We all know that. Not shocking at all. I've heard of cops collecting drug money for relatives who sell and do it whilst on duty and using a police vehicle. When you go to ALL police stations you get treated like dirt. They just stand around or walk around and keep popping their heads to look at who's there, without assisting. They have thos govshop pictures of ministers on the walls as though they are God's gidt to the country but those pictures speak the incompetence and inabilityy to deliver services. I ws discouraged from trying to report a crime, actually an attempted murder at the Chatsworth police station, they told me that the victim must come to the hopital when he gets out and report it. They are useless because they know they can get away with it. I'm close to 45 years living in SA and never once has the police been of any benefit to me. I say fire them all and get private armies in, at least until the crooked cops all die. Death penalty would help too. Waht makes it worse is that these crooks have teh law to back them and they are armed and trained. The ordinary citizen looks like a clown in a police station, it's a surreal experience going there evn to get help from the child protection unit in Phoenix a few years back. Bloody incompetent agents. I heard they wait for the shooting to end then they go for the bodies. No Guts! Mightas well train our prison gangs and pay then money to police our communities, of which you might get a little more from them...
