Pietermaritzburg - The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court this week sentenced a 42-year-old rapist to five life terms plus 38 years behind bars on a range of charges, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Wanderboy Myeni was convicted on 18 charges, including rape, kidnapping, fraud, malicious damage to property and impersonating a police officer.

The crimes were committed between 2009 until 2012 in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas, said police spokesperson Major Zwane.

In one of the cases, Myeni kidnapped two victims in Pietermaritzburg and took them to Msinga, where he raped them repeatedly.

When the victims escaped, they reported it to police, said Zwane.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, welcomed the heavy sentence handed down to Myeni.

“This will serve as a strong message to the would-be offenders that our specialised units will thoroughly investigate such cases against women and children to make sure that perpetrators are brought to book.”
