Makhado, Limpopo - Four men were arrested for allegedly planning to hunt rhino in the Waterpoort area, near Makhado, after police received a tip-off, Limpopo police said on Monday.

“During the joint operation by members of crime intelligence, organised crime and the tactical response unit, the first suspect was arrested (on Sunday) after he came back to the vehicle used by the poachers to retrieve more ammunition,” Colonel Ronel Otto said.

Further investigations revealed two other suspected poachers were still on the farm.

“With the assistance of air support provided by the local farmers the men were arrested while trying to leave the farm.”

The fourth man, a employee on the farm, was caught late on Sunday evening. He was found in his room on the property.

“A hunting rifle, an axe as well as the vehicle used by the suspects were confiscated.”

They allegedly fired shots, but no rhino was harmed. They face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

The men, aged between 29 and 41, were due to appear in the Waterpoort Periodical Court on Wednesday. - Sapa
