Kimberley - Four men appeared in the Groblershoop Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly hacking a man to death with an axe.

The four, Jandre Meyer, 20, Johan Bedefort, 22, Phakise Mothle, 22, and Hendrick Epnaar, 31, were arrested following an argument between them and the deceased.

Police spokesman, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, said that it was believed that the argument led to a fight, during which 28-year-old man Ricardo Spandiel was hacked to death with an axe.

"The incident happened over the weekend in Dankie in Groblershoop. The suspects were arrested shortly afterwards and are facing a charge of murder. The case was postponed to Wednesday for a formal bail application."

Tawana added that, in a separate incident, a 21-year-old man was arrested in Kuruman on a charge of business robbery at Bankhara Supermarket in the town.

"The incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 7.45am. The suspect, along with two accomplices, stormed into the Bankhara Supermarket, armed with firearms, and robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime vouchers and cigarettes. They fled the scene in a red Toyota Tazz," Tawana said.

The suspect was later arrested.

"During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of the firearm used during the robbery, as well as a bag containing cigarettes and airtime."

The other two suspects are still at large and the investigation is continuing.
