Tonga - Four men linked to the fatal shooting of an Mpumalanga police constable appeared in the Tonga Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The matter was postponed to February 3 as the presiding magistrate was not in court.

Constable Sfiso Mtshweni, 27, who was once a member of the SA National Defence Force, was shot dead at his home in Langeloop, south of Malelane, on November 8, 2013.

Mpendulo Makamo, 21, Absalom Nkosi, 25, Soneni Mhlabane, 27, and Innocent Lucas Ngomane, 30, were arrested in connection with the crime. They have yet to plead.

They are expected to apply for bail when the case resumes next month.

Mtshweni's murder outraged local police leaders. At his funeral, they vented their anger at those who failed to protect the police.

“People have turned into animals. How can we kill each other like this? We know some community members knew about the plan to kill Mtshweni, but they kept quiet,” Komatipoort Community Police Forum chairman Stanley Madonsela said at the time..

“We have seen a lot of outbursts by the public when people were killed by the police, and people forget that police are also human beings, not born in a tree. Where is the national media now?” he asked.
