Four in court over killing of two copsComment on this story
Vereeniging - Four people facing charges of murdering two policemen – who were shot and killed while responding to a hijacking in Vereeniging almost three weeks ago – have made a brief appearance in court.
On Monday, the four, who were arrested after police pounced in the early hours of Friday morning, appeared at the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court.
Daniel Tshakela and his colleague, Warrant Officer Mongane Moagi, from the Vereeniging police station, were responding to a hijacking in Korhaan Street, Solan Park, when three armed men shot and killed them.
At the time, provincial police spokeswoman Pinky Tsinyane said the owner of the house and his brother were pulling out of their driveway in a Toyota Corolla to a nearby shop when a white Elantra stopped and blocked their way.
She said three robbers had pointed firearms at the siblings and instructed them to get back into the house.
One of the brothers had seen blue lights flashing from a patrolling police vehicle when he was shot and wounded in a leg while trying to escape to alert the police. A neighbour, who had heard the gunshot, alerted the police.
As the policemen arrived, the thugs then shot them.
The gang stole a marked police vehicle and used it as a getaway car.
The case was postponed for further investigations.
