Pretoria - About 480 passengers' trip was cut short owing to stolen train tracks. They were traumatised when the Friends of The Rail train derailed on its way to Cullinan on Tuesday.

Alika Steyn of Friends of the Rail confirmed the passengers’ trip was cut short due to stolen train tracks. She said it was the first time they encountered this type of incident this year but have had similar incidents in the past. “It is really frustrating to have to deal with this because we have no control over the situation,” she said.

Despite the incident, she was glad the derailment did not cause any harm to passengers as they were all uninjured.

“Passengers are now on their way to Pretoria, we have organised buses to transport everyone and made sure that they are comfortable and arrive safely,” Steyn said.

Steve Appleton, train manager at Friends of the Rail, said it was unfortunate that they could not complete their trip to Cullinan but they were thankful that none of the passengers were hurt.

“Passengers were traumatised but were happy that they all got out unscathed,” he said.

He said that only two of their drivers got a slight bump on their heads when the train stopped but it was nothing major.
