A teenage girl is in a coma after she and a friend were doused with petrol and set alight in an apparent satanic ritual.
The girls, one 18 and the other 16, were among eight youngsters who went to a koppie behind the Linmeyer swimming pool on Julius Street on Friday night.
According to Samantha Theologo, her 18-year-old sister Kirsty has 75 percent burns to her body from the waist up.
Doctors had told them, she said, that they were worried about her sister’s recovery because her lungs and throat were damaged. Kirsty was scheduled to have surgery on Monday.
Samantha said the group of five boys and three girls knew each other well and her sister would hang out with them often. One of the boys was a neighbour and one of the girls lived on the same street.
Teenagers say the koppie is a well-known spot for youngsters to sit at weekends to look at the view and drink.
The Theologo family heard from the other victim – Kirsty’s friend, who is recovering in a private hospital – that the boys had decided that the two would be sacrificed in some sort of satanic ritual.
“We don’t know exactly what happened. We heard they were tied up, but we don’t know,” said Samantha.
The boys are said to have poured petrol over her sister and set her alight. Her friend then tried to put out the flames, rolling Kirsty in the sand. In the process she was also burnt.
The rest of the group ran away, leaving the two girls to climb down the hill on their own.
“In the state she was in, my sister made sure they walked to safety,” said Samantha. “She walked all the way to Rosettenville – about 2km away.
“I wasn’t home, but my mom told me she found my sister in the bathroom washing her face.
“My mom said it was horrific.”
According to a medical source, speaking to The Star on condition of anonymity, the teenagers were driven to South Rand Hospital by their pastor, then transferred to other hospitals.
“It was impressive that they walked all that way in their condition.”
The source said a third girl told them that the boys cut her hand and held it over a Bible so that the blood could soak it, while Kirsty was burnt.
Provincial police spokeswoman Captain Pinky Tsingane said the girls were tied up and there was speculation the attack was a satanic ritual, but they still needed to investigate this.
A case of attempted murder was opened.
By late on Sunday, two boys, aged 19 and 21, had handed themselves into the Booysens police station, said Tsingane.
Meanwhile, Kirsty’s family are dealing with extreme shock.
“It’s horrible, it’s scary and just horrific what happened to my sister,” said Samantha.
“My mom is in a state and can’t talk. Friends are breaking down.
“Kirsty is in Grade 11 and is loved by so many people. This is a nightmare.”
Izabella Little, from the teenage advice forum Lifetalk, said Satanism was not spoken about very often.
There was an incident in Cape Town last year where a mother contacted her to seek advice after her teenage daughter was kidnapped and brought to a type of church where another teenager was murdered.
She managed to escape, but was very traumatised.
“Police investigated the incident, but it was never mentioned in the media,” said Little.
“We always hear rumours about Satanism, but it is not something people are talking about. We would like them to come forward so that this can come into the open.” - The Star

@ I'm an official member of the "Church of Satan. No matter what you may say or think about religious folks of this world. Take your nasty brand of home grown religion and shove it. This incident as the work of some sick minds, that's all, I am sure it has nothing to do with satanism or paganism.

If there is a God, and Jesus is God or the son of God, then the devil (Satan) exists. If not, none of them exist. You cannot beleive one and not the other.

Irrespective of all the invectives, morality, decency and respect for human values have their roots in Christianity and the further a society moves away from that standard, the further that society sinks into this kind of violent degenerative behavior. Evil in it's many manifest forms and the instigator of evil Satan is real. You don't have to look to far from the child to see the father! Their actions must be punished - God will ultimately punish Satan in the lake of fire.(Matt 25)

GrahamF 10:18am: Facts are facts. The facts of Christianity are clearly one of violence. Here's the difference: I, as a Satanist, do think for myself, or else I would never have adopted the name. Serving an invisible man in the sky is not thinking for yourself.

Gee I guess just calling it attempted murder was not exciting enough. No lets call it a satanic ritual instead. The fact are the girls hand was cut and she was dosed with gasoline and set afire, the rest is just dress up to make it sell papers better. I get so tired of this garbage from the media to increase their readership or numbers viewing, this use of cheap sensationalism. Teenagers playing lets pretend is teenagers playing lets pretend. I doubt if any of them have ever read enough or practiced enough to actually be Satanist. Ah but it does liven up the headline.

Kyle@03.26pm - right on! Yes - these are psychopaths that should be in a place of safety - theirs and everyone's. The point I've personally made in the past 4 or 5 Meme-Man posts is that the particular psychosis that evidently led to this; satanism (or religion, racism, etc.); results from a mind-virus, a corruption of the software of a mind. To understand the cruelty here and the context in which it operates, you need to understand memetics. In this case, we need to have great pity for the victim of the crime; but to prevent it (and to prevent perpetrators like this) we need to realize that the solution is not to invest in another invisible and imagined deity whose story runs with rivers of blood and suffering, but to dig into the cause of the malady; which is a mind corrupted by fairy-tales. And, to take this thought further, there aren't "good" and "bad" fairy-tales, there are just delusional ones.

Its not satanic. Its a bunch of kids trying 2 be all bad ass. If it was satanic believe me the girl would have been dead and they wouldn't run away or let anyone try and help her. I had a cuz that was killed by satanist and till this day they never caught anyone and no one turned themselves in. So stop fighting about shit and start thinking logically about things.

@cd - - I was forced to read it in school, and I've given it a go once or twice and it's even more pathetic as an adult! You know which book sums up the bible best? Jonah. Read that (it's only two pages, I'm sure you know) and tell me that isn't just a HUGE lie. Thank you!

"Angry as hell"@1.48pm - you are absolutely right - this is a human tragedy, and the whole conversation becoming a pissing match between superstition and reason. The reason, of course, is that superstition is to blame in this case; and many on this feedback page are as guilty as the perpetrators because they actually believe that invisible gods or devils actually exist; and by believing that, they perpetuate this type of ritual cruelty. My previous Meme-Man posts below have tried to propel the discussion by explaining how such mind viruses come about; and how to inoculate oneself from them. Of course, any virus has a defense mechanism, so that most will find themselves too afraid to get this inoculation. But the fact remains that this is a disgusting result of a dreadful meme (read my previous note on Meme's further below).

Anon@11.36 - "666 - Prove it." Referring to 666' @11.12 "There is no satan, take responsibility you ignorant litte idiots".... Thing is, Anon - the burden of proof doesn't lie with the one denying the existence of a fictitious character - it lies with the one claiming the existence. And, if you disagree, you need to furnish proof that Santa Clause doesn't exist, or the Tooth Fairy, etc. In placing that reciprocal burden of proof on you we need to provide some consequence to your inability to prove it: Given that the consequences for continuing to imagine that a sky god and his enemy satan actually exist; just one consequence being this burning of a fellow human; let's hypothetically say that your inability to disprove Santa will result in you paying me a tithe of your salary until you can. Where can I send my bank details?

this is not a religious fight, it's criminal! Regardless of what might have happened. Please do not go blame Christianity of any other religion for that either. There are clear ground rules put out in any religious about what is and is not acceptable, and if people choose to be religious and adhere to rules like those of the 10 comandments, then maybe SA would be a better place, where people will be governed by "a sence of right & wrong". We used to go to parks, neighbours, 3 streets down, school sport fields and public swimmingpools without having to fear things like kidnapping, rape and murder. It's a sad sad world!
