Durban - A Glebelands hostel peace committee leader was gunned down on Monday afternoon soon after leaving the uMlazi Magistrate’s Court.

Police spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala said a 40-year-old man was shot dead in Prince Mcwayizeni Road in uMlazi’s V section at about 1.30pm.

“It is alleged that the deceased was walking along the road when occupants of an unidentified vehicle opened fire towards him and fled.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene,” Gwala said. No arrests had been made, she said.

According to a statement by Vanessa Burger, a community and human rights activist who has been involved in trying to bring peace to the uMlazi hostel, the killers opened fire on him with rifles and handguns from a white double-cab bakkie.

“They were experts it seems, injuring no one with whom he had been walking at the time,” said Burger.
