Guard killed in Durban cash heist

Durban - A cash in transit guard was shot dead by armed men at a Durban mall on Tuesday afternoon.

Hans Mabunda,44, a guard with Fidelity Security was picking up cash boxes from two stores at the Phoenix Plaza Shopping Centre when he was attacked.

The attackers fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha, Mabunda was declared dead at the scene.

“Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man lying on the floor at the centre with life threatening injuries. Tragically he was declared dead at the scene due to the extensive injuries that he sustained,” said Botha.

When IOL reporters got to the crime scene, Mabuda's distraught family members were busy identifying his body.

Mabunda's brother Aaron said the family was shocked by the incident.

“ My brother was a good, church going person. We are shocked by what has happened to him. He was transferred to Durban from Polokwane a few years ago,” said Aaron.

Centre management was unavailable for comment.

Police have confirmed the incident.
