Cape Town - An off-duty police officer was shot at on Tuesday morning while driving in Khayelitsha.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said the officer was travelling along Landsdowne Road with his two brothers in a private vehicle at about 5am.

A group of men, camped out inside a white Corsa LDV, opened fire on his car. In the spray of bullets, the 26-year-old police officer was shot in the arm. His brothers escaped unscathed.

Traut said the motive for the attack was still unknown and no arrests had been made. “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attempted murder.”

Metro EMS spokesman Robert Daniels could not yet comment on the officer’s condition.

The incident follows the death of three police officers at the end of last month in two separate shootings.

Two officers were killed in Nyanga when they responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, while a third was shot dead while off duty in Mfuleni.

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested for allegedly shooting a City of Cape Town traffic officer outside his home in Rocklands in March.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said a 41-year-old man had been arrested in Mitchells Plain last Thursday.

His arrest followed a tip-off to the city’s Special Investigation Unit. When police arrived at the scene, they found the man in possession of a .22 pistol.

Smith said: “This arrest is a very positive development and is the first breakthrough in a series of attacks on city law enforcement staff this year.”

Earlier this month, law enforcement officers were attacked by three armed men when they responded to an alarm at the Moses Mabhida Library in Site C, Khayelitsha.

Deputy Minister of Police Makhotso Sotyu was set to visit the family of three people gunned down after a prayer meeting in Philippi last week.

The Zantsi family were already mourning another relative who had been shot the week before.
