Northern Cape – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) have arrested five suspects who are allegedly part of a drug syndicate in Upington in the Northern Cape, the Hawks said on Tuesday.

The arrest of the suspects, aged between 30 and 38, was made through an intelligence-driven investigation on Monday.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Philani Nkwalase, said that the investigation project had started in November 2015 to focus on the illegal drug trade in the Upington area.

"Upon their arrest, the following items were seized: 2 laptops; 21 cellphones; 5 passports; R 13 380, 68,520 Naira, as well as drug implements," Nkwalase said.

"They were charged in connection with the Drug and Drug Trafficking Act and the contravention of the Immigration Act."

The suspects allegedly traded with an undercover Hawks agent during the course of the investigation.

The suspects are set to appear in the Upington Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
