Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal police have appealed for assistance in apprehending three men who gunned down a University of Zululand student during an apparent house robbery in Vulindlela, the township surrounding the university’s main campus in KwaDlangezwa.

Last month, 25-year-old Bachelor of Commerce student Frank Chirwa was shot twice in the head and died on the spot after unknown gunmen ambushed him and his friend at an off campus residence where some university students stayed.

Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects was urged to contact detectives at Mtunzi police station.

“The Mtunzini detectives is appealing to the members of the community for information that could help them to solve the murder case they are investigating,” Zwane said.

Zwane said Chirwa was in his room together with his friend when three men, one of them was in the possession of firearm and ordered two of them to lie down on the floor.

“During the exchange of words between the suspect and the deceased, the suspect shot the deceased Frank Sithembiso Chirwa (25) twice and died at the scene,” Zwane said.

“The suspects ran away with the deceased’s cellphone. The suspects are believed to be in their 30s. The Mtunzini police are investigating the murder case and house robbery.”

Chirwa was laid to rest last month at his home in Montclair, Durban.

Meanwhile, police are yet to make an arrest after a 21-year-old University of Johannesburg student, Kelvin Baloyi, who was gunned down at an off-campus students residence earlier this month allegedly by a security guard following a minor altercation.

Baloyi, who was shot once in the head, was buried in his native home of Mozambique two weeks ago.
