Durban - In Reservoir Hills on Wednesday, a homeowner killed one of three robbers lying in wait for him.

According to a police source, the homeowner parked his car in the driveway, unlocked the door and was deactivating the alarm when he heard footsteps.

When he looked up three men ran towards him. One had a huge dagger in his hand, the source said. The man tried to fend them off, grabbing hold of the knife.

The homeowner managed to free one of his hands and grabbed his gun, shooting the knife-wielding robber in the head. The other two fled.

According to the source, mud marks on the floors indicated the struggle with the homeowner.

The robbers are believed to have climbed over his fence, into the bush separating Clermont and Reservoir Hills.

The dead suspect was clad in blue overall pants and a dark top, which police said matched the description of suspects involved in at least 10 other robberies and burglaries in the area.

The police dog unit failed to find the suspects.

According to the source the dead suspect’s shoes and clothes were wet, indicating he had walked through the bush.
