A Cape Flats dad has admitted in court that he kidnapped and strangled his own son.

Junaid Desai appeared in the Cape High Court on Monday where he was found guilty of murdering eight-year-old Moegamat Yunis Desai.

The Grade 2 boy disappeared on November 4 last year and two weeks later his decomposing body was discovered under a tree in bushes next to Vanguard Drive near Westgate Mall.

In his plea, Desai said that he killed his son because the boy told him he was miserable and he felt unable to help the child.

He said he had gone to fetch his son from school (Merrydale Primary) because he wanted to spend time with him.

Desai said while they were walking, Yunis told him that he was very unhappy about where he was living and, as his father, he said he felt powerless to help his son because he didn’t know where to go for help.

Desai said he was overcome with emotion and strangled the child.

He said he left his son’s body under a tree because he was afraid and went home to wait for cops.

Desai didn’t explain why he waited for the police.

The dad admits he lied to his son’s mother, Rene Jonkers, when she asked him if he knew where Yunis was.

But he later made a full confession after he was arrested.

Sentencing procedures are expected to start this week. - Daily Voice
